Child Obesity…A Deadly Epidemic

Child Obesity Dallas | High Blood Pressure Dallas | Diabetes DallasThe statistics are everywhere you look: newspaper, TV, radio and the web. The increase of childhood obesity is constantly on the rise. What is not publicized is the consequences of this epidemic. What is the toll that our children are paying?
Obesity can have an effect on almost every organ system. The medical list is long. There can be type 2 diabetes, heart dilatation, fatty liver, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, elevated lipids, acid reflux, bone and joint problems, depression and ultimately a 20 to 30 year shortening of expected life span.
Medical statistics show that when these complications occur, they progress much more rapidly, and at a much younger age. Therefore an obese 20 year old with type 2 diabetes will experience complications much earlier than a 60 year old with the same diagnosis. The complications include kidney failure, decubitus ulcers, limb amputation and blindness. Also the risk for diabetic coma is markedly increased.
Can you even imagine how painful obesity is to a child or teen? Self esteem issues are monumental. I see this every day. The pain in their eyes tells all. The tears break my heart.
While it seems that indulging our children is a sign of love, we are killing them with our kindness. Try to think of rewards other than food. Your child will remember the time you spent with them long after the treat you gave them.
Parents are in control. Stock your pantry and fridge with healthy snacks. Limit sweetened drinks and empty calories.
You must set a good example for your family. Get active. Make sure everyone gets enough sleep. Reduce screen time, that’s TV, computers, video games, and cell phones. Set one goal a week for your family and reward with time not food.
This is the first generation since WWI that is not expected to out live their parents. We must take control now.
