Lead exposure, Old/New Threat
Do you know how dangerous lead exposure can be for your family? The Dallas Morning News had a good article on this topic on Sunday, October 23rd. The research was spurred on by the concern over the battery recycling plant in Frisco.
The problem of lead exposure and lead poisoning is our leading cause of environmental contamination in the U.S. Children under six years of age are at the greatest risk for damage to their developing brains.
All of the DFW Metroplex has lead contamination in the soil from the time when gasoline contained lead. Also we can be exposed by household objects such as jewelry, pottery, and lead paint on toys.
The problem with lead exposure is that it has no symptoms. That is why we do lead screening at your child’s annual health exam. We will now screen all children 6 years and younger with a simple finger prick. Depending on the test result, we will recommend further management.
It is our goal to pick up on this health problem long before it can cause permanent brain damage and loss of IQ points.
If you think your child has been exposed to lead, get a finger stick blood test right away. The result is known immediately and requires little time. Please make an appointment anytime to have this critical test performed.
